FinnFun turned 40 — and we created our own song

Jazz artist Eeppi Ursin came to write a theme song for FinnFun

Forty years. That's a lot of songs, a lot of children, a lot of adult language classes, and a lot of Finnish spoken on the rainy west coast of Canada.

FinnFun Finnish School of Vancouver opened its doors in 1985, and ever since, our classrooms have been a place where families come together to keep the Finnish language and culture alive.

Far from Finland geologically, perhaps, but never far from home.

When our 40th anniversary year arrived, we wanted to mark it in a way that felt truly special. So on Sunday, October 5th, 2025, something memorable happened at the Scandinavian Centre in Burnaby: Eeppi Ursin came to visit.

Eeppi is a New York-based, platinum-selling, award-winning singer-songwriter, jazz vocalist, composer, and pianist originally from Finland. You could say Eeppi is a Finnish soul with a New York stage. And she didn't just come to perform. She came to create something together with us, our own theme song for FinnFun!

FinnFun is not her first Finnish school visit either. She has brought her family concerts and songwriting workshops to Finnish communities across North America, connecting children and families to their roots through music.

The morning was spent in a songwriting workshop, where the children composed FinnFun's very own anniversary song together with Eeppi.

What emerged was a beautiful FinnFun theme song: carrying the voices of every child who helped bring it to life, and how they wanted to express their love for Finland.

After lunch and coffee, the concert began. Eeppi performed beloved songs and gave the world premiere of the brand new FinnFun song.

The day was for the whole family. Little ones came and went as needed, and the energy in the room was something we won't forget easily. Full of laughter, dance and genuine fun!

Forty years of Finnish language, culture, and community in Vancouver. Thank you for making this happen with us.

Cheers to the next 40 years!
